Lawrence Folvig is an Australian born guitarist, bassist, composer and improviser currently based in Melbourne Australia.

Playing guitar from the age of 12, Lawrence's passion for music making led him to The Victorian College of the Arts to complete a Bachelor of Music, specialising in improvisation where he garnered the 'Dr Phillip law Award for innovation' in 2005.

 Over the past 20 years Lawrence has formed many strong musical relationships and collaborated in a wide variety of different roles and musical styles across Australia, UK and Europe. Since the early 2000’s Lawrence performed on guitar in the Melbourne Jazz and Improvised music scene with various artists including David Tolley, Ren Walters, Shannon Barnett, James Macauley, Barney McCall, Eamon McNelis, Lachlan McLean, Andrea Keller, Sam Anning, Kyrie Anderson and Niran Dasika.

 From 2010 to 2020 Lawrence was a collaborator with Australian singer songwriter Ainslie Wills. Some notable highlights include the pair co-writing and producing the Ainslie’s debut LP You Go Your Way, I'll Go Mine which was nominated for the Australian Music Prize in 2013. In 2016 their song Constellations was deemed Lauren Laverne’s Headphones Moment of the Day on BBC 6. In May 2017 Lawrence toured with Ainslie on a 20-date national tour of the UK and EU supporting artist Tom Chaplin from the renowned UK rock band Keane.

In 2017 their song Running Second made it to the final nominations for APRA song of the year alongside the likes of Paul Kelly and Amy Shark. In 2019 Lawrence Co-produced Ainslie Wills’ second album All You Have is All You Need and in July 2020 the album received an AIR award nomination for Independent Album of The Year and the single Fear of Missing Out was shortlisted for APRA Song of The Year. Some of their notable performances together include supporting Vance Joy (AU), Leon Bridges (US), Hiatus Kaiyote, Michael Kiwanuka (UK), Lianne La Havas (UK), Tom Chaplin (UK), Bernard Fanning (AU) as well as festivals including The Great Escape Festival (UK), Reeperbahn Festival (EU), Womadelaide, Falls Festival, Panama Festival and Dark MoFo.

Some of Lawrence’s notable work as a guitarist in recent years include performing with Emily Lubitz (Tin Pan Orange), Ben Abrahams, Kurt Rainbow and Georgia Mooney’s Supergroup tour featuring Ngaiire, Martha Marlow, Clare Bowditch, Josh Pyke, and Tim Minchin.

In 2024 Lawrence performed on guitar with the Australian Art Orchestra and Kutcha Edwards at Mona Foma festival in Hobart and Now or Never festival in Melbourne.

In December 2024 Lawrence performed a cover of The Pretenders classic 2000 miles live on national television with Megan Washington (Bluey, How to Make Gravy) for the 2024 Vision Australia Carols by Candlelight on Channel Nine. In January 2025 Lawrence also played guitar with Phosphorescent (US) for their Australian east coast tour.

 For the past year Lawrence has been regularly performing with LIIT a predominantly improvising trio that explore rich sonic textures underpinned by rhythmic, melodic and harmonic frameworks derived from their extensive trio recording sessions. The trio features drummer Kyrie Anderson and trumpeter Niran Dasika.

 Lawrence has collaborated as a composer, arranger, and producer for Florence Waking Vale’s debut self-titled EP (2023) with Kane Mazlin (Hungry Kids of Hungary) and more recently as a co-producer and session guitarist with Melbourne songwriter Clio Renner (Rockwiz, Paul Kelly, Alex Lahey) for her upcoming album ‘Don’t Hurry the Dance’ released in March 2025.

 In January 2022 Lawrence released Lucent, an EP of original electronic music compositions and in January 2023 he released Revelate, an EP of original compositions for solo baritone guitar.

In 2024 Lawrence released ‘bloom into’ is an electro-acoustic solo guitar EP consisting of three improvised pieces that incorporate extended techniques, real-time effects processing and the integration of metal and wooden objects to extend the timbral range of the electric guitar.
